A story for understanding "Akaiwa City"
Introduction
Akaiwa City, located in southeast Okayama Prefecture, was born on March 7th 2005, merging 4 towns in Akaiwa County; Sanyo, Akasaka, Kumayama and Yoshii. It has been developing the urban infrastructure such as the transportation network, while maintaining the rich natural and cultural heritages. The newly merged city has a population of 45,624 in an area of 209.43 square kilometers. Akaiwa City - the city for the people, the city where the people can fully enjoy their life, the city filled with unique characteristics and enthusiasm. "Lively people, shining city" is brand-new Akaiwa City's catch phrase.

Sanyo Area
Location, Geography, History
Sanyo Area Situated in the southwestern part of the city and attached to Okayama City. This area gives you a glimpse of the history from the ancient and medieval times to present day. The area has a lot of ancient tombs, such as Minamigatamaeike and Ryoguzan Ancient Tombs, and historical sites such as Bizen Kokubunji temple ruin and Senkoji Sanjunoto(three-story tower). Three villages, Takatsuki, Koyo, Nishiyama, were merged into former Sanyo Town in 1953.

Akasaka Area
Location, Geography, History
Akasaka Area Situated in the central part of the city. The area has seen a civilized life since the ancient times. The area has about 150 ancient tombs where Sueki earthenware was found. Five temples and thirty shrines are scattered out in the area. Three villages, Tottorikami, Karube and Sasaoka, merged into former Akasaka Town in 1953 and part of Futsumi Village joined the town in 1956.

Kumayama Area Situated in the eastern part of the city. The area has a number of historic sites, such as Yagami Komaruyama and Kumayama Ancient Tombs. Three villages, Toyota, Kama and Onoda, and part of Kumayama Village merged into former Kumayama Town in 1953.

Yoshii Area
Location, Geography, History
Yoshii Area Situated in the northern part of the city. A ceramic coffin (prefecturally designated cultural property) was found in Koeda Nigo Tomb in the area. Three villages, Susai, Yamagata and Saekikita, merged into former Yoshii Town in 1954 and Nibori Village and part of Futsumi Village joined the town in 1956.
